My very first SLR camera was a Canon Rebel T1i that I had received as a birthday gift back in 2009. I had always be an avid photographer prior but had fallen off shooting after graduating college, that is, until I was reintroduced to it again. At the time, I was running my own pet care company, so naturally I thought why not do photoshoots of these fur balls for their owners? I honestly couldn’t have picked better subjects to practice my skills on. After all, I saw them in their natural surroundings every day, and on top of that, you can guarantee that these guys will always show the kind of raw emotion that can be difficult when it comes to photographing people. Those are just some of the many reasons why I love and admire animals so much, aside from being so full of energy and so damn squishable.
So these photographs have a special meaning to me as it was a time of my life where I had my first “aha” moment in my budding photography career. My first realization was I knew I loved photography but I didn’t always know why. The second, the closest thing to stopping time is behind a camera. A photograph keeps that moment living on for as long as you want it to. It was this realization that made me truly fall in love the work that I do, the art of it, and the process of growing and mastering your craft. Once you find that, it’s an incredible feeling, a feeling so fulfilling and right that you’ll never want to stop.
